Carte Blanche #3: Paper planes

Welcome to Carte Blanche, where our talents’ minds run free. This month, we’re shedding light on a project that sprung from our Motion Design team: a paper plane’s epic journey.

When we created the Carte Blanche series, we wanted it to play as an exploratory exercise, where our creative minds could test new things, push their limits and ultimately sharpen their skills. This time, our Motion Designers pushed it to the next level. Not only did they create their own variation on a theme, but they actually co-created a full artpiece — which resembles them individually and collectively. The result? An unexpected video that makes us wonder: isn’t this tiny piece of paper the representation of a creative mind, jumping from one thought to another?

1# — The Original Plane, Stéphane I., Animation Studio Director

“The biggest interest for me was to create a collective piece of art. Working with total creative freedom and seeing my work reinterpreted by other artists is such a thrilling experience. The idea for the paper plane came from a technical challenge, folding a digital piece of paper is trickier than it looks! It’s funny how the simplest things in real life are the hardest to render in a digital motion.”

#2 — Journey Through Space, Fabien Leibzig, Motion Designer

“Who isn’t fascinated by space? The way I see it, it would be less costly to send paper planes than actual rockets to space. The representation of that was the foundation of my creation, which I loved doing. Rarely have we got the chance to work simultaneously on the same project. I love the pride we all get from working on such projects.”

#3 — Gameboy Immersion, Yoann Monnet, Motion Designer

“I love a good artistic challenge. For me, this project was interesting because it was the chance to try something new, to mix different techniques: 2D, 3D, traditional cartoon and pixel art. On top of that, I paid a tribute to the 2 things which fascinated me as a child: space and my Super Nintendo.”

#4 — Above The Clouds, Max Antille, 3D Motion Designer

“Ever wished to fly? I wanted my creation to be more realistic than my fellow colleagues. I love the idea of a tiny paper plane never setting foot on land, being endlessly carried away by wind streams. We never really pay attention to things flying above the clouds…”

#5 — King Kong, Bryan Decoppet, Motion Designer

“To me, twisting is creating. In this project, the idea was to mimic the famous King Kong scene with the skyscraper and helicopters. The retro touch was kept on purpose and the copters were swapped with our paper plane. I really loved the collective aspect of this work. It’s crazy that with the same guidelines we ended up doing such super different videos. It feels good to express ourselves artistically.”

#6 — Changing Sceneries, Michael Rappaz, Video Editor

“Being able to mix things up and try new things is definitely my favorite aspect of any digital creation. For this project, I used different techniques on Adobe’s After Effects in order to create almost oneiric worlds for the plane to navigate through.”

#7 — Brainman, Louarn Jagut, Interactive Media Designer

“I love simplicity. Have you ever watched children play for an hour? They are the most creative individuals. As a big kid myself, I always approach digital creation with a naive mindset. For this reason, my video depicts a cartoonish world and a brain-human turning off the light. Well, why not?”
